All children are naturally musical! We have a range of offerings for the earliest beginners through age 6, including formalized, age-appropriate, sequential classes, through fun concerts for the family. You may not know that while your child is having fun singing, listening, moving, and playing rhythm instruments, he/she is also developing specific musical concepts such as high/low, fast/slow, soft/loud, steady beat, and beginning pitch matching! At this age of musical development, children begin to discern and appreciate higher level musical concepts, such as dissonance, and rhythmic and melodic memory improves. This is a great time to jump into participatory classes like Classically Kids, and also the time when most children land on a favorite musical instrument for individual study. We have some special offerings for singers as well, and those kids who just finished fifth grade band will want to take Jump Start into Middle School Band! A refined harmonic sense is being established at these ages, as well as an increase in music appreciation, both cognitively and emotionally. Kids are now naturally developing finer technical and musical skills in their individual study, as well as creative skills such as improvisation and composition, and collaborative skills for playing in small group ensembles. We have a variety of special one time only opportunities, from a community play-in with Maestro michael Christie and members of the CMF Orchestra, to special talks and workshops with world renowned guest artists like Mark O'Connor, Street Drum Corps, and Time for Three.
